AdvocacyMany issues and concerns confront people with disabilities as they seek to live independent and productive lives. Most of us take for granted such things as access to affordable housing and transportation, reasonable accommodations in the workplace, and access to public facilities—all of which are critical for individuals with disabilities to retain their independence. The Center’s Advocacy Program assists you, your friends and family members to work together to generate awareness, engage in positive action and create needed change in laws and programs that affect people with disabilities. Working together on advocacy issues allows our consumers to accomplish their goals, gain knowledge, skill, insight, self-confidence, and a sense of satisfaction as society moves toward a world where diversity is valued and community is strengthened. This critical work can also shift societal attitudes toward inclusion, acceptance, and respect. An excellent example of our advocacy work is Citizenship In Action, (see below) a group of people with and without disabilities, which meets each month to work on projects and set goals.
