Implementation of the Help America Vote Act in 2006 provided new opportunities for people with disabilities to vote. Many were thrilled to vote privately and independently for the first time in November of 2006 by utilizing improved voting systems for individuals with disabilities to exercise their right to vote. There are still some problems with the accessible voting systems concerning access to polling places and training poll workers to fully utilize the Disabled Access Units (DAU) for anyone who wishes to use them. If you are interested in helping people with disabilities to register, vote, understand the issues, get to the polls, etc., please contact us for more information on the Voting Task Force and Citizenship In Action.
